MAIAC AOD: Multi-Angle Atmospheric Correction

MAIAC AOD: Multi-Angle Atmospheric Correction
Back to Data Catalog

The Multi-Angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC) algorithm retrieves aerosol optical depth and surface reflectance from MODIS at 1-kilometer resolution globally. Unlike traditional dark-target approaches, MAIAC uses time-series analysis and angular information to separate surface and atmospheric contributions.

MAIAC AOD is widely used for satellite-based PM2.5 estimation in epidemiological studies, particularly in urban areas where coarser-resolution products are insufficient. The algorithm runs on the complete MODIS record from 2000 to present and is available through NASA's Earthdata LAADS DAAC.
