The Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) aboard NASA's Aura satellite has been measuring trace gas columns and aerosol properties from low-Earth orbit since 2004. OMI provides daily global maps of ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, formaldehyde, and aerosol index at approximately 13 × 24 km² nadir resolution.
OMI data has been instrumental in documenting the decline of SO₂ emissions from power plants and smelters, tracking volcanic eruptions, and monitoring urban NO₂ trends globally. The dataset is widely used for air quality model evaluation and emission inventory verification.
